I just got back from picking up my printed piece for the Dîa De Los Muertos group show I’m participating in this weekend and I’m really pumped on how it came out. The show is at HOWL in downtown Fort Myers and it features paintings and sculptures all themed around Day of the Dead.
If you arent familiar, (i barely am) Day of the Dead or All Souls’ Day is a latin holiday celebrated on the 1st and 2nd of November were people pay homage to lost loved ones by visiting their graves with personal gifts and food and stuff. One of the common gifts that people bring are what’s called sugar skulls. They are these brightly decorated skull shaped cookies that they give to the dead to encourage them to visit or communicate or something. I personally think they may be on to something with that. If i was a soul floating around the universe, I know I wouldnt be coming back unless food was involved. Ive always really loved the imagery surrounding the holiday even though i dont know much about it, so i had a lot of fun tackling the subject matter. I also think the idea of celebrating life by embracing death just seems like a great way to appreciate the time we have and lives of the people we’ve lost.
Anyway, im really stoked to be showing something at HOWL again even though i wont be able to make it to the opening. You should though if you’re in town. The opening is Saturday but it runs through the 25th of November. More deets HERE
